How often should a fire extinguisher be refilled?
After any use, after a failed inspection, and on the schedule its type sets. What the tag on the cylinder tells you, and what a refill to BIS standards includes.
An extinguisher that has been used, even for a second, is empty for the purpose of the next fire. The pressure that pushes the agent out is gone, and a cylinder that reads full on the gauge can still have a blocked siphon tube or a damp powder charge. These are the three moments a refill is due.
After any use
Refill it the same week. A short burst to put out a bin fire costs as much pressure as a full discharge, and the valve seat may no longer hold. Bring the cylinder in, or call us and we exchange it on site.
After a failed inspection
Every non-residential building in Tamil Nadu has its extinguishers inspected and serviced once a year by a professional fire protection company. The engineer checks the gauge, the weight, the hose and nozzle, the pin and seal, the date of the last hydrostatic test and the condition of the agent. Anything outside its limits means a refill, a part, or a replacement cylinder.
On the schedule the type sets
Each type has its own refill and test interval under the Indian standard for extinguisher maintenance:
- ABC dry powder: the powder is checked for caking at every annual service and replaced on its schedule, with the cylinder hydrostatically tested at the interval the standard sets for stored-pressure types.
- CO2: weighed every year; a loss of more than a tenth of the charge means a refill. The cylinder is hydrostatically tested on its own, longer interval.
- Foam and water: the charge is discharged and renewed on a shorter cycle than powder, because the agent degrades in the cylinder.
- Clean agent: weighed and pressure-checked every year, refilled only when the weight has dropped.
The exact dates for your cylinders are on the inspection tag. If the tag is missing or unreadable, treat the extinguisher as due.
What a refill to BIS standards includes
We empty the cylinder, inspect it inside, hydrostatically test it when it is due, replace the agent with the grade the cylinder is certified for, fit new seals and a new pin, pressurise it and sign the tag. Every type available in India, every brand. Most refills are done the same day in Coimbatore and Chennai.
